I have visited 2 subdivisions with all siding and no brick in the low to 200 range calling it affordable. I agree to get affordable homes doesn't mean it has to look cheap. It's not fair to those who want to buy affordable houses. For instance, ryan homes is a well repeatable builder but why does the subdivision built on whites creek look more exclusive than the brick pike subdivision? The subdivision on whites creek pike are beautiful with brick etc but the more affordable homes on brick church pike look plain. All siding. No brick. If it's affordable why do we have to settle for the low budget look? This needs to be discussed w/ our HOA and for one. I can't give them consent because there have been some foundation problems from people around here. And were about 100 feet from the project. I look out my back window and there they are. The work they've been doing already has been VERY loud and I can feel the movement from the equipment and when the big tree's were falling, I could feel it. We are already talking about is the problems were having all of a sudden are caused by what they've done already and are they going to pay to fix and or secure our foundations to protect them from further damage once they start blasting. My opinion is, if they start blasting, It will without a doubt cause damage to already unstable earth in this area. Catastrophic events are historically used to clear poor and working class people from affected areas. However, Sulphur Dell did not relocate. Neither did many of the industrial businesses that occupied the area, including the business offices related to the Nashville Union stockyards.

But my real point in this post was to point out all of the current amenities, like the state park and the Farmers Market (both of which flooded in 2010), would not exist in our area if we mandated the moves that were proposed for New Orleans. Same applies to the new ballpark, which is built on flood plain. That ballpark, along with its real estate developments (flood-resistant condos and apartments built for wealthier people) were not subject to questions about the wisdom of building in this area. But I've got plenty of 2010 photos on this blog that showed the area south of Jeff St. underwater.

I have no problem with prohibiting neighborhoods on flood plain as long as it is applied equitably regardless of economic class or social standing. Using catastrophe as an excuse for clearance and economic development for wealthier neighbors, though, is another matter. People are living and even more will live in this area because Nashville has determined that they are worthier to live there than previous generations who chose to do so. There were devastating floods in the area in 1927, 1937, 1939 and 1950. Germantown was above flood level and survived. The flooded area in this photo, between Jefferson and the State Capitol was demolished, all of it is gone and has been for many years. Helps to know the history of Nashville and the truth behind a photo when using the photo to make a point. The same thing happened across the Jefferson Street Bridge in East Nashville. Considering my focus was on so much of the gentrification going on in the neighborhood led to me to wonder what may eventually happen to this building, its powerful significance to the history of Nashville as well as the Civil Rights Movement which ultimately led black Americans to gain equal knowledge through education. I have lived here for 8 years now and never knew what this building was or meant to the foundation of today's educational aspects. As a black American, standing on the property of Fehr elementary school, there is no words to express how I felt and how thankful I am for learning the epic events that took place right where I stood. Thank you for this sharing this. This should be shared and expressed in the area since so many building are being newly gentrified. This building must remain standing as a positive reinforcement tool in our city. In fact, I offered 3 constructive points about the block party at last November’s business meeting: 1) the residents of the block to be shut down should be included in event discussions and planning, 2) the committee should make sure it has enough volunteers signed up before following through with the event, 3) equipment and decorations should not be left out on the street for weeks after the event is over. Note: at no time did I blog on these points.

Even though I brought these suggestions up in a business meeting, the response I got from you and other social committee members present then seemed defensive and dismissive. The fact that you now “take offense” to what is offered as constructive criticism confirms my perception that the social committee is not serious about welcoming suggestions for event evaluation, whether they are made in business meetings or on a blog.

Something else strikes me as strange about your comment. You were SNNA secretary in 2012, at which time you wrote into business meeting minutes criticism of me by an outside developer (not a member of SNNA) during a meeting that I could not attend. You sent those minutes out to the association without any warning to me. I was told by some who attended that dues-paying members openly questioned the negative comments about me, but their questions were not written into your minutes. Everyone understands that my blog is an expression of my own personal opinion, but your one-sided business meeting minutes were the official record of the group. Given that track record, it takes some gall to criticize how I choose to express my personal views of events.

Background on the 2012 unpleasantness:

http://enclave-nashville.blogspot.com/2012/06/hate-mail.htmlS-townMikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05948307051485318061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10635442.post-12389706496714935142015-02-18T15:22:18.194-06:002015-02-18T15:22:18.194-06:00Would love to read a post regarding the mayor'...Would love to read a post regarding the mayor's Nashville Next and the Nashville Neighborhood Leaders Conference. It is interesting to note that the new NNA and Neighborhood Resource Center is being run by a board that includes CM Scott Davis (pro development of any kind and pro Karl Dean no matter the cost), Council Candidates Jeff Syracuse and Colby Sledge. If you read Colby's bio on the McNeely, Piggott, and Fox site it would seem that he is on the Planning Department's payroll for his role in Nashville Next. Mike, can you research that? As a candidate for council, should he not immediately step down from a paid position with Metro? Nashville's neighbors will lose all independence if these people remain on the NNA and NRC board. The garage was sold as part of the ballpark package and as a way to take pressure off of the neighborhoods. You can bet that even if there had been an inkling that the garage would be later than the ballpark, neighbors at these meetings would have demanded a temporary T&P plan for the first year.

Also, your comment is disingenuous, given the Tennessean reporting that the state said that garage construction has been a longer than anticipated process. Apparently, reporter Joey Garrison, who has followed the ballpark question for years at two different papers considers the delay news. When the Mayor was asked about it this week, he did not reply, "We never promised the completion of the garage by the first season." He passed the buck to state officials for the delayed ground breaking.

You seem to be parsing meanings in legalistic fashion to control the perceived damage. If not, can you link to info that clearly shows garage completion slated for the 2nd season? I've followed this process closely and in my opinion, there was either an attempt to deceive from the beginning or there was an error in construction planning with no back-up plan in place (which is why both Metro & the Sounds are scrambling to get one in place). The main questions preying on my mind now are: were the expected garage parking fees charged to fans the first year put in some income column in the budget projections, and what kind of blow is the 1-season absence of home game parking fees to the revenue side?S-townMikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05948307051485318061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10635442.post-38197253793845682582015-02-06T11:04:11.149-06:002015-02-06T11:04:11.149-06:00There was never an expectation, and definitely nev...There was never an expectation, and definitely never a promise, that the garage would be completed in time for the stadium opening. I'm not sure why this is even a story. No reports have indicated that the garage would be completed this year; the priority, whether one likes it or not, was to have the stadium ready for Spring season. A garage would certainly be helpful for traffic and parking issues, but it's a non-story that the garage won't be ready this year.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
