Destination Unknown, Updated

I was supposed to be at today's Metro Planning Commission Meeting right now prepared to speak in favor of a local developer's construction plans along 6th Avenue, North at Hume Street and Garfield Street, but I remembered that today's Planning Agenda included the internecine feud between Sylvan Park neighborhood factions over overlays. I would rather try to dodge the cold rain outside than to wade through that standing-room-only crowd hurling invective and epithets at each other and their Council member. On top of that, the Nashville Auto Diesel College institutional overlay is up for Commission consideration, and neighbors around the college seem to have a valid case that their properties were "down-zoned" about 9 months ago so that now the College can offer to buy their properties at lower cost than before the "down-zoning." So, they are fighting as well, but probably for a worthier cause than the Sylvan Park warriors.

So, I hung out in my warm home watching the beginning of the Commission proceedings on Channel 3, psychically willing the Salemtown re-zoning requests to be added to the "Consent Agenda"--that is, the condensation of uncontested items on an agenda that Commission members can vote on as a group without any discussion. Sure enough, each of the zoning change requests that I had been asked to endorse publicly were placed on the 1:00 Consent Agenda and quickly passed about 30 minutes ago. But now I'm all dressed up with no place to go.

12/08/2005, 3:30 p.m. Update: Planning Commission voted to disapprove the motion to grant an institutional overlay for Auto Diesel College. Apparently, Metro Council will have to defer their action on the College until more community meetings are held in East Nashville.

12/08/2005, 5:05 p.m. Update: Planning Commission just voted to approve the motion to grant the conservation overlay for Sylvan Park. It is in Metro Council's hands now.
