The largest private charity involved in aid for Katrina survivors also deserves mention as one of the biggest losers in 2005 for their failure to prevent and to stop their own sub-contractors from giving friends and family members access to contributed funds earmarked for displaced New Orleaneans. According to MSNBC,
fake claims drained at least $200,000 from the fund, with an average payout of about $1,000. Jiminy Christmas! Charities seem to do as good of a job harboring graft and corruption as any government agency might.
