Washington Post has a
relevant article on the loss of historic core black communities in northwest urban cities (originally the result of race-restrictive covenants in white suburbs in the 1950's and 1960's) due to white gentrification, high demand for property in urban corridors, and the ease with which African Americans can now move to the suburbs due to integration gains. It's a fascinating look into the various dynamics of our neighborhoods.
Interesting story. The opportunity for blacks to have choice in housing would inevitably lead to dilution of these neighborhoods. The influx of whites and other ethnic groups to improve and integrate these areas should be a plus, not a minus.
ReplyDeleteFinally, we need to take a longer term view of thinks and accept that neighborhoods, schools, etc. will grow, change, and evolve over time. If they didnt, we wouldnt have Edgefield in the shape it is today.
