It is hard for me to tell whether this qualifies as evangelical kitsch or merely a Pentecostal wet dream of theo-cracy, but a Memphis church has marred the skyline with what it calls the "Statue of Liberation Through Christ." "Lady Liberation is said to stand on behalf of the "poor breaken-hearted" (use of spellchecker on the inscription was apparently not required). The most morbid facet of this display is that the pedestal on which Lib rests is said to contain the tomb of Jesus Christ. The cross Lib wields weapon-like is gold, which is apropos: the church, which already had a bowling alley and a bookstore, now has another revenue stream with the merchandising of this pretentious, inferior icon.[photo credit: New York Times]
