I Need Your Help with Some Junk Mail

Today's snail mail brought us our edition of the Nashville English First petition, which Eric Crafton is using as an end-around last year's mayoral veto in order to force Metro employees never to speak any other language to help people out.

I'm trying to think of some creative means (lying beyond the lip of my trash can) of doing my part to cause a little inconvenience, cost, and annoyance to this hateful movement.  Is it illegal to protest the paranoia by filling in false names on the petition and mailing it in?  Any other ideas on how I can add a little bit of drag to English First?  Something truly Alinskyite would suit me.

UPDATE:  Andy Axel got his, too.  He's shredding it.

  1. Can you send it back written in Spanish? I wouldn't include a name so they don't get ammunition for the petition. Maybe just fill in the comments section in Spanish and leave it at that. That sends a message, especially depending on what you decide to say...

  2. Is it postage paid? Sending it in blank should still cost 'em.

  3. Rip it in two and nail it to the door of the Courthouse. OK, tape it...no reason to deface the door. If enough of us were to dispose of this garbage in that way it would definitely get someone's attention.

  4. I simply filled every line w/ a different request, e.g. "Please don't ever send me xenophobic material like this again," "Please don't ever send me bigoted material like this again," etc.

  5. Y'know, I definitely see something wrong with a Metro Council member running an astroturf campaign that he won't publicly sign his name to in his mailers - and doing so in order to effect the policy of the Metro Council.

Not everyone follows the news, and it isn't readily apparent on the mailer who's bankrolling this initiative.

Am I the only person around who thinks that the ethics here are highly questionable?

  6. Nope, and Crafton has been ethically challenged for a long time. He behaved the same way with a quasi-secret group called "Save Our Schools," which was also connected to the Davidson Co. GOP. He also participated in the charade that put homeschooler Kay Brooks in an open School Board seat against the wishes of her constituents. He ran for office using a mailer that included a thank-you letter from the School Board director, making it look like an endorsement.

  7. If it's got a postage paid return, mail a brick back with it. They have to pay the postage. Add a nice hand written note, explaining that now they've got the brick, would they kindly throw it through their own window?
