Why Did McCain Pick Palin?

The vetting of Sarah Palin that John McCain failed to do is being left to others. And they are turning over stones:
It seems quite clear that [serial contacts about Palin's Alaskan Trooper brother-in-law] emanated from Pallin and that she was actively in it. So she abused her power as governor and then almost certainly lied about her involvement. Why did McCain pick her?
Because his judgment is unsound?

    palin is a good pick for VP, the media is just looking for anything and everything for a downfall.
