Whet Moser
explains why reporters are getting their lunch money taken by bloggers. Moser guesses that risk aversion is much of the reason for journalists' passion-less (not to be confused with "dispassionate") writing. I would maintain that it is also because journalists' sources collapse their own interests with that of journalists, who serve as gatekeepers and pitchers for those in control. Consequently, critical questions are left to outsiders like bloggers, who as Moser points out are willing to write and to analyze for free.
