California Leading the Way against Sprawl
According to Progressive States Network--motivated by a coalition of affordable housing advocates, the building industry, environmentalists, and local governments--the California legislature approved a bill that promotes affordable housing and checks suburban sprawl. The bill would integrate regional development, affordable housing and transit planning into one synchronized system. Developers who follow transportation planning needs would get quick tracked under state environmental review procedures. It is a great idea to give the building industry bureaucratic preference and cost-saving incentives for building green and supplying affordable housing. Too bad Tennessee is behind California's curve.
