The Salemtown e-mail list is burning up this afternoon with news of burglars breaking into a duplex called Salemtown Townhouses at 11:00 this morning on the 1600 block of 5th Avenue, North. Reportedly the invaders used a "battering ram" to break through a mostly glass door on the backside of the house. No one was hurt, but nerves are shattered around here. I also received a report that the police apprehended some suspects. I'll follow up once the police confirm that.
UPDATE: Also, reports are that another duplex in the 1600 block of 5th was broken into yesterday between 7:30 AM and 2:00 PM and before that on Saturday. One resident saw three suspects walking across her yard after the break-ins and she describes them as two African American men and one African American woman. They are reportedly driving a green Toyota Camry.
The resident whose home was broken into earlier today tells me that despite the burglars breaking in a big glass back door, the alarm did not go off until they had taken her computer and her DVD player and walked out the front door (she has a breakage sensor 10 feet away from the back door). The police were already almost to her house after a neighbor reported the break-in before they got the call from her alarm company, Brinks Home Security. When she called Brinks Home Security to ask them to send someone out to check the sensor given that did not set the Brinks Alarm off, they told her that they would charge her for the service. What kind of customer service is that? Talk about kicking someone when they are down!
