The AP has word that many illegal immigrants are complying with tax laws by filing returns to bolster their case later to be granted citizenship. That sounds more lawful than an American corporation moving its mailbox and bank accounts to another country in order to evade paying its fair share of taxes.
By the way, we may want to look to Texas now for where we may be after a decade or two of immigration. Their legislature, including the Republicans, has given up trying pass anti-immigration laws as money demands the jobs that immigrants perform and state governments can do little themselves to change the situation without top-down changes at the federal level. Texans, the majority of whom are now non-Anglo, are dealing with the reality that anti-immigration is strictly an election wedge issue that garners more votes than laws.
