Planning has had a public information officer for a number of years -- the item to which you link is in error in suggesting that this is anything new at all. The fact is that the Planning Department receives hundreds of information requests from media and other sources each year -- someone has to respond to those.
This is an issue the Metro Council is going to try to bang the drum about as well. But if you want a government that is able to be responsive and open and share information, it's not a bad thing to have a tiny handful of people accountable for doing that.
