Respectively they are the profits in billions that Exxon (up from 5.6!) and BP (up from 4.9!) have reported, even though gas prices have been sky high for months. You may not be enjoying your commutes, but the people who control the gas spigots are enjoying them. You bankroll their lifestyle. High prices along with government entitlement programs for gas corporations and the opening of the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge for drilling basically insures that the bonfire of petroleum extravagance will continue to burn for some time. Luxury comes at a high price.
To add insult to injury, look for big oil to blitz the airwaves with blatant "we're-all-in-this-together" PR to try to salve your energy nerves. Now that they've got all those billions of profits, they're going to have to spend them on something flashly to keep you buzzed and "fuelish." God forbid they sacrifice like the rest of us are having to do during this national malaise.
