A couple of years ago I attended a Nashville Civic Design Center screening of "The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces," a documentary identifying qualities of the built environment that draw people to linger and socialize. I also wrote a series of articles on Nashville's small urban spaces--
some of which can be read here--based on my viewing.
If you haven't seen that documentary, yet, I highly recommend it, and fortunately, it has been posted on YouTube:
