Although purchasing property does not ostensibly seem connected to stormwater run-off controls, it is one of the strategies that Metro Water Services uses to prevent damage to property by flooding. Whenever it can the utility in concert with the city buys buildings on flood plains and demolishes them, creating more green space and minimizing the chance of flood damage the future.
Up for approval Tuesday night is a resolution that would authorize the city to acquire, on a voluntary basis a home on the Seven Mile Creek floodplain and to demolish it. The city's portion of the bill 25% of the purchase price, with a TEMA grant funding most of the purchase.
